The former QPR boss returns just over a year after his departure as assistant to Steven Gerrard and a return to a successful formula in the 2020/21 title-winning season has been in sight.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s reign was over and enthusiasm returned as Malik Tillman capped a superb first half with two goals to take a two-goal first half lead.

Leverkusen were impressive opponents when they knocked Rangers out of the 2020 Europa League but they looked like a rocky pre-season when Scott Arfield’s goal ended them.

Beale’s intention is to see the full squad before returning to competitive business in the Premiership against Hibs next Thursday and he is making a lot of changes to see what is available.

However, there were no major injuries, so Tom Lawrence, Conor Goldson, John Soutar and others were still waiting to impress.

Defiant Neil McCann believes there is still a title race going on – and is attacking whoever writes off the current Rangers.

Michael Beale has inherited a team nine points behind Celtic and will need a small miracle if he is to bring back Ange Postecoglou and reclaim the Premiership title in his debut season in Glasgow. The manager refuses to think about a potential turnaround, instead urging his players to focus on each game to come and see where it takes them at the end of the season.

But McCann found it odd that so many of his fellow experts had announced the race.
