Yung Gravy being sued by Rick Astley for copying vocals from ‘Never Gonna Give You Up
Yung Gravy faces trial by the man himself… Rick Astley sues rising rapper for ripping the singer’s voice off his greatest hits.
Astley filed legal documents in Los Angeles Thursday, claiming that the wildly popular “Betty (Get Money)” Gravy used a dummy version of her own voice from 1987’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
In documents obtained by TMZ, Astley said that Gravy and his producers – including Dylan Francis – “conspired to include intentional and nearly indistinguishable imitations of Mr. Astley’s voice throughout the song.” He also sued Nick Seeley (aka Popnik), the vocal impersonator.
Astley said he never gave permission for Gravy or anyone involved in “Betty (Get the Money)” to use or imitate his voice – and because Gravy did, he hurt Rick’s chances of future collaborations with other artists.
However, we have to say that Gravy licensed the instrumentals of Astley’s ’80s hits… just not the vocals.
What’s more… Astley’s lawsuit points to several instances where Gravy claims he knew he was in dark territory for posing as Rick, including an interview with Billboard where he said he had the voice for Rick “basically remade” because it makes it easier to see the law.”
“Never Gonna Give You Up” was a huge hit for Astley and shot to number one. “Betty” is Gravy’s most successful song to date, going gold in the US, Canada, and Australia.
Astley sued for millions of dollars.
